about
Elizabeth is my first single and a major labor of love. It's a true story that took place during my last year of high school in Thunder Bay, On.
I was walking during my lunch break one wintery day and came across an elderly woman who had fallen on ice and badly broken her knee. I had someone call 911, and I asked her if I could help. She was cold and so in shock she couldn't even tell me her name. She was on her hands and knees, so I lifted her upper body, knelt facing her and held her in a hug to wait for an ambulance. I could feel her heart racing against my chest so in an effort to calm her down, I started quietly singing to her. Slowly her heart slowed, her breath changed, and she was able to tell me her name, her son's name, and what had happened. I kept singing in between bits of chatting, and she commented that I had a lovely voice. Then she asked my name. When I said it she gasped. She asked if I was related to Joe Deleo (my late grandfather, and talented drummer). Then she proceeded to tell me that her late husband had played trumpet in my Papa's jazz band back in the day, and that she and my Nana would dance at their shows together.
I was stunned. I had never met Elizabeth. I had barely known my Papa Joe before he passed, but I have always felt as though he left his music in me when he departed, as well as in several of my super talented cousins and siblings.
This was a serendipitous and emotional experience I will never forget. Elizabeth soon became a poem , then a few years later, a song. I am so proud to be able to share this song as my first single, and I want to thank all of the beautiful folks who helped me create something I love. I am THE luckiest!
lyrics
Lyrics:
I walked the long way that day
For no particular reason at all
And the snow fell slowly around me
Like tears to the frozen ground
The day was late November
A day my mind has etched in stone
And I know that the pain is bad, Elizabeth
But I will not let you go
I had assumed I'd forget what to do what to say
And how to control my own sanity
But this day brought to life a power greater than any
Any you could have taught me
The day was late November
A day my mind has etched in stone
And I know that the pain is bad, Elizabeth
But I will not let you go
I held Elizabeth tight that day
Trying to dispose of all her hurt and fear
And it was as they tore her out of my arms
She said that I was her guardian angel
The day was late November
A day my mind has etched in stone
And I know that the pain is bad, Elizabeth
But I will not let you go, no no no
Oh, yeah, the day was late November
A day my mind has etched in stone
And I know that the pain is bad, Elizabeth
But I am your guardian angel
No you are my guardian angel
